DSM Engineering Materials is a global supplier of high-performance engineering thermoplastic solutions. DSM Engineering Materials has a focused portfolio of products; with each of them, it has realized global leadership. DSM is the global number 3 in the overall market for semi-crystalline engineering plastics and is the global market leader in high-temperature polyamides.

The Site DSM Engineering Materials Emmen produces the polymer Polyamide 6 (Nylon) based on caprolactam in the PA6 plant. This polymer is used in textile and carpet yarns and for domestic, industrial and electrical applications. Additionally, in the Compound plant, polymers for specific applications are made based on five basic polymers. These polymers are made by adding colouring agents, reinforcing agents, mould release agents, flame retardants or other additives, and are supplied under the name Akulon, Arnie and Arnitel. DAP manufactures raw materials for both plants. The end products are then packaged and prepared for shipment. There are high demands in the field of SHE: DSM achieves an accident-free workplace.

Key areas of accountability/responsibility

  • Develop the QESH policy, in compliance with DSM’s corporate requirements, national and international laws and regulations, ISO14001 & ISO TS 16949, GMP, FDA & UL94 standards and sustainability requirements.
  • To advise and challenge management in translating QESH policy into annual and longer-term QESH plans and in setting priorities and short-term and long-term targets.
  • Ensure that the international certifications ISO14001 & ISO TS 16949 are maintained.
  • Monitor the implementation of QESH policy, the QESH performance and progress of the Unit, and report to management.
  • Ensure proper reporting within the Management line, to the Managing Board and to the relevant corporate staff departments.
  • Organize and co-execute QESH inspections and audits within the organization.
  • Actively support investigating QESH incidents and challenge follow-up.
  • Improve lead times and effectiveness of mechanical/flame analysis to support OTIF improvements
  • Manage and coach the employees in their work and development and support a challenging, customer-oriented environment with high-quality standards and a positive working climate
  • Is responsible for maintenance of the Qlab QESH management system and for the training of employees on extrusion injection moulding and mechanical testing
  • Advise on QESH training programs.
  • Stay abreast of relevant QESH developments in general and of relevant laws and regulations. Anticipate on consequences for DEM Emmen.
  • Participate in internal and external QESH-related working groups.
  • Build a long-term relationship with relevant stakeholders (e.g. governmental departments, firefight brigade, neighbour parties, knowledge clusters).

The complexity of the position

  • Integration of two different plant organizations with their own culture and management system into one site management system.
  • To act as a “liaison” between the Site and BU.
  • Operating in a complex “licensing world”.
  • The tension between licensing bodies, who request long-term commitments of the production site, while such authority lies outside Emmen.

Knowledge and educational level

  • MSc level in Sciences
  • Knowledge of QESH systems and practices, and audit techniques
  • 6-8 years of broad experience in the industry
