Construction Manager & Project Support – Uranus Project – Leeuwarden

In this role, you will be responsible to manage the execution phase of the Uranus Project in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. In addition, you will support engineering activities at the end of basic engineering, like a review of the technical design of the building and technical installations and constructability review. You will be the linking pin between the DSM team and all the disciplines in the construction companies.

The Uranus project is an approx. 2 M Euro project to construct a high care room for hand scooping and packing of cultures, including installation of building-related automation and placement of the required inventory. Your work location will be DSM Leeuwarden and contractor office as needed.


Functional and organizational report to DSM Project Manager.

Responsibilities in Construction Management

  • Ensures DSM SHE requirements in construction are followed. Including but not limited to:
    • Supporting identify the SHE risks within the project
    • Preparing SHE construction plans
    • Providing DSM SHE training to in-coming contractors on aspects for construction
    • Checking the quality of contractor-SHE plans
    • Ensuring and checking for the presence of TRA and plan of work.
    • Organizing SHE supervision as required
    • Plans work permit process: Issues DSM work permit, briefs and aligns with the site.
    • Carrying out daily SHE rounds during construction
    • Reporting SHE issues as required. Implementing improvement actions
    • Monitoring and ensuring the quality of contractors the toolbox meetings
    • Ensuring that contractor employees have done the SHE test prior to entering the site
    • Tracking and recording hours worked and safety incidents
    • Ensuring that incidents are reported and recorded by the contractor
    • Participates in the constructability reviews
  • Management of the contracted civil and technical installations parties (two main execution contracts, with the civil contractor as main contractor and responsible for coordination between civil and technical installations)
  • Coordinates mobilization on-site
  • Coordinates and aligns with the site on all relevant subject (e.g. set up of building location, mobilization, permits with site impact, lay down and temporary office area, traffic, etc.)
  • Monitor closely integral construction planning and reports delays, deviations, or adjustments to the project manager
  • Drives and facilitate alignment and optimization of work schedule between different contractors Closely monitor scope changes (more work / less work) during construction, obtaining approval from a project manager as needed
  • Coordinates and addresses questions from contractors
  • Monitors and supports the organization of supply of construction materials. Coordinates with site temporary storage space for materials ordered by DSM.
  • Coordinates construction meetings, ensure proper reporting
  • Reports the project progress versus the project plan to the project manager on a regular basis.
  • Advises the Project Manager on the status of Mechanical Complete
  • Oversees the testing done by contractors (loop tests, commissioning, validation, etc.)
  • Takes the lead on resolving punch list items
  • Supports start-up activities as needed
  • Oversees completion of as-built documentation

Responsibilities in Project Support:

  • Supports the project manager during the basic and EPC phase in various tasks (preparation of MOC documentation, checking engineering company deliverable, etc)
  • Supports the flow of information between contractors and DSM, ensuring alignment
  • Responsible for implementation of Project Quality Control and Assurance during the execution of the project
  • Other assignments as required to keep execution going safe and properly.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably civil engineering)
  • 5 years’ experience in a construction management role. Proven construction management Skills.
  • Proven people leadership skills
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills
  • Good knowledge of engineering disciplines: civil, mechanical, E&I, process control
  • Experience in projects in the Food industry
  • Good understanding of quality assurance and quality control in projects
  • Stress resilient
  • Entrepreneurial initiatives / proactiveness / takes ownership.
  • Good team player personality, positive working attitude, and high service orientation.
  • Fluency in Dutch and English (spoken and written).
  • Experience in civil construction (buildings with Food requirements).
  • Available for this assignment at least from April 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021, preferably available several hours in March to support basic engineering, contract set up, and tender evaluation
