Category Manager – DSM

Location: Delft, The Netherlands

As a category manager, you need to develop, implement and realize the strategy for the assigned category. All within corporate requirements and guidelines to ensure results on all KPIs as defined with BG and to contribute to the overall result of DSM.

Position context

  • Extensive contact and close cooperation with internal stakeholders;
  • Leads and participates in cross-functional teams;
  • Works in close cooperation with Sourcing analysts and Contract Managers;
  • Works in close cooperation with local buyers/purchasing assistants;
  • Coordinates functionally with other Global/Regional Category Managers;
  • Extensive external contact with suppliers;

Key areas of accountability/responsibility

  • Develops and deploys vision and approved plan for her/his category and provides input to the Team Lead and Purchasing Director when implementing Regional/Global plan:
  • Responsible for category strategy development to deliver maximum value:
  • Defines and leads (regional/global) cross-functional procurement teams:
  • Develops and manages the relationship with key suppliers and tracks their performance (Supplier Relationship Management):
  • Manages relationships with internal stakeholders during projects:
  • Quality, Health, Safety and Environment


  • Concludes and implements contracts within proxy
  • Leads Cross-Functional Teams
  • Manages and maintains categories strategies

The complexity of the position

  • Deep understanding of the categories (supplier base and market trends);
  • Managing a global supplier base and multiple sites;
  • Building credibility and authority across the internal stakeholder’s community;
  • Leading complex cross-functional/multi-regional teams, participating with different objectives;

Knowledge and educational level

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably in business administration, commerce, engineering or another relevant discipline;
  • In-depth knowledge of the Category;
  • In-depth knowledge of Procurement processes (strategic and operational) in a business-to-business context;
  • Knowledge of DSM global businesses;
  • Very good knowledge of negotiation skills;
  • Very good knowledge of contracting tools;
  • Very good knowledge of English and any other language is a plus;

Required level of experience

  • A recognized qualification in Procurement;
  • Substantial professional experience (>5 yrs.) in Procurement, marketing & sales or product management;
  • Experience in international matrix organizations;
  • Change management capabilities;
